Please give us your views

We are planning some changes to services in East Gateshead. This includes a large investment in refurbished vehicles, changes to some routes, new branding, simpler fares and revised timings to assist reliability. We would now like to know what you think of our plans. In return, you will be entered into a free prize draw, where you can win free travel for one month on all Go North East (GNE) services.

East Gateshead

The East Gateshead Quality Bus Partnership is committed to involving bus users and residents in decisions about these matters through representation on the Partnership’s Stakeholder Board. The board members would like to hear your views.

All responses received by Friday 22 August 2008 will be considered for our service plans in this area.

The section of route between Gateshead and Newcastle is the biggest single cause of delays at peak times. To improve timekeeping we propose to terminate services at Gateshead, which means that buses would not run to/from Newcastle. Alternative high frequency services are available between Gateshead and Newcastle, with buses up to every two minutes giving access to a wide range of destinations in the City Centre.

If we decide to terminate buses at Gateshead, how would this affect your travel patterns?
I would make more journeys on service 51/52
No change
I would make fewer journeys on service 51/52
I do not currently use service 51/52

To speed up your journey and make the buses easier to use, we are planning to introduce a standard adult single fare of £1.20. This would apply to all journeys that do not involve crossing the River Tyne, and would replace all existing single and return fares.

For journeys to/from Newcastle, we are planning to introduce a standard adult single fare of £2.00. This would allow you to change onto any other GNE bus at Gateshead Interchange, giving you access to a wider range of destinations in Newcastle City Centre (including Central Station, Eldon Square, the Haymarket and John Dobson Street).

We are investing £200,000 in refurbishing vehicles for this service. This will give all buses a bright and fresh interior, with on-board information screens, CCTV and new seating for a more comfortable and relaxing journey.

We are also looking to give this service its own identity, which will include a new name and colour for buses to make them easier to recognise.

The junction of Kells Lane and Beacon Lough Road causes delays to buses at peak times. We have spoken to Gateshead Council about improving the layout of the junction, but no date has been set for work to commence. We may therefore have to add extra minutes into our peak schedules to ensure that buses run to time.

Is there anything else we should be doing to make your journey more reliable?

We are planning to divert service 57 via Whitemere Gardens, Manor Gardens and Kirkwood Gardens in Wardley. This would replace service 59 and give residents of Wardley a direct bus to Newcastle every 30 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes. Service 57A would be unchanged.

We are proposing to divert buses from Albion Street to serve Coldwell Lane, Crowhall Lane and Watermill Lane in Felling. This would give better access to shops and other facilities at Felling Square.
